Destination Places Description

Tbilisi

According to the legend, the area of present-day Tbilisi was covered with lush forests without any inhabitants as late as 458 AD. This is the date old Georgian records indicate as the establishment of the city by King Vakhtang I Gorgasali of Iberia. The King went hunting in that heavily wooded area with a falcon. The falcon caught a pheasant, but struggled and both both birds fell into the nearby water. When the King and his army looked for the birds, they discovered the water was hot, and the birds had boiled. He was so impressed with the discovery that he decided to build a city.

Mtskheta

Mtskheta  is an ancient town of extraordinary importance to the Georgian nation, located about 20km out of Tbilisi. It was the capital of the eastern Georgian kingdom of Iberia from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD. Mtskheta was the site of Georgia’s adoption of Christianity in 334 and remains the headquarters of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Mtskheta is of primary interest to any travelers interested in Georgian history or Orthodox Christianity. Roam around in the scenic and old city Mtskheta whose “historical monuments” have become UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994.The beautiful city with gravel stone walkways, forts, cathedrals, monasteries and several other monuments is situated at the confluence of Aragvi river.

Kakheti Region

Kakheti is a historical province in eastern Georgia. Kakheti, and especially the Alazani valley, is the biggest wine region of Georgia and is consider the cradle of wine. The legend states that from here the wine spread all over the world. And indeed, the main attraction of that region, besides the old churches and monasteries, are the hundreds of small and large, modern and ancient wineries, partly still run family owned.

Kazbegi

Kazbegi, now Stepantsminda may not be the average visitors “must visit” place – with the exception of the drive along the Georgian Military Highway that leads to this frontier town. But on a closer look at this mountain-town you do realize just how much it means to pause a while, breathe and begin a new journey in a town that doesn’t have more than five restaurants, where any activity is limited to long walks through mountain villages, hiking in the mountains or simply strolling alongside the river and looking up at the snow covered mountains rising above you.
